Chapter 11

FITZ

“You know how this works. Telling me not to freak out will do just the opposite.” He couldn’t imagine what it was that Charli wanted to show him. It must be something big, going off the earlier interaction between Charli and Charles. Also, Charli was fidgeting with her hands. Her fair skin had gone pale, the fine lines around her eyes and mouth tightening. He didn’t know how much of her body language was owed to her being upset in general or nervous in the moment. Charli was deeply hurt and traumatized, which was why she was having such a hard time speaking of Poppy in the past tense. It cut him to see Charli in such a state. He had to do something to make her smile. It’s what he’d always done for as long as he’d known her—work hard to earn one of her resplendent smiles that could light him up for a week. He gave her a scrutinizing look, his expression deadpan. “You’re not going to tell me that you’re in league with the aliens and have a herd of cows in the basement, are you?”

Her eyes rounded the second before she burst out laughing. “Not hardly.”

It was rewarding to know that he could still make her laugh. Those kisses had been something. She could claim all day that she was into Mitch Jones, but her lips didn’t lie. Fitz just had to figure out a way to prove to her that he wasn’t going anywhere. Not this time. She was the one. He only hated that it took him so long to realize it.

She straightened her shoulders like she was bolstering her courage. “Let’s go, funny boy.”

“Do you mind if I use the loo?”

“I’ll show you where it is.”

“Thanks, love.”

“Sure.” They shared a smile, and he could almost see her softening towards him.

After he used the loo, he went into the enormous foyer where Charli was waiting. The scale of the table in the center was too small for the space, making the area look sparse—more like a museum than a home. Stepping up beside her, he took in the expanse of the curved staircase that spanned the entire width of the tall foyer. “It’s a bit crowded in here,” he sniffed. “You could use a wee bit more space.”

She laughed again, shaking her head. “Come on.”

His teasing was helping her to relax. Good.

She went up the stairs as he followed after. Her platinum hair bounced on her shoulders with each nimble step. Charli didn’t like to think of herself as a fashionista, but her appearance was flawless, and her slender body moved with an elegant grace that spoke to her privileged upbringing. You can take the girl out of the castle, but you can’t take the castle out of the girl. They went down a long hall. She stopped at the last door on the right.

Nervous jitters radiated off her. He touched her arm, his gaze latching onto hers. “Whatever this is … it’ll be okay.
